I've been working on this project a bit lately, trying to get somewhere on it.
You can see the project in all its glory here. There is much to be done. This is a reproduction of a Swedish wool embroidery. This type of stitching was common in southern Sweden in the 1700 and 1800s. These types of projects were usually made into cushions and meant to be used for sitting on. I don't know about you, but I can't imagine letting anyone sit on a project that takes this much time to make!
These wool embroideries were folk art at its finest. Colorful birds and flowers, horses, and sometimes figures are common motifs. My reproduction is stitched on thick felted wool. Sometimes it's literally a real pain to stitch on it. Historically, the stitchers used woven wool, the type made into clothing which I believe must have been easier to work on than the felt. It's cool doing this type of stitching, it's actually quite fun, and the wool is very forgiving. It's become a bit popular lately here in Sweden. The reproduction is fine, but I long to try my hand at some folk art themes too. They just have an irresistible charm!
The embroidery looks so striking against the black background. It's a shame that it is so difficult for you to work on the black felt. I can't imagine letting anyone sit on such a project either :0)
